This winter is expected to be filled with snow and temperature fluctuations. Oh joy, can’t wait!
When our bodies experience extra stressors, like constant weather changes, it is best to make habits that boost our immune system and keep our bodies resilient.
There are multiple things we can practice preventatively to ensure we keep feeling healthy.
Check them out:
Scarfs and socks and Merino wool, oh My!
Traditional Chinese Medicine says we should protect our necks, ankles and skin surfaces against the outside elements. We can layer clothing, as well as switch from summer’s cotton ankle socks, to full over the ankle, all the way to the knee, wool socks. Additionally, long underwear will help regulate body temps and will wick away moisture from skin. Investing in a good set of Merino wool underdoodles will assist avoiding the traditional itch from wool to skin contact for most people, and reduces the amount of layers needed to stay toasty warm.
Soups and Spices
Smoothies with whole veggies and fruit are a great way to pack in nutrition, but because smoothies tend to be cold, this can be taxing on our digestive system, so it is time to switch from the blender to the stock/crock pot. Soups are now the reason for the season. Soups and stock are typically highly nutrient dense with added vegetables. Additionally, add fats in the soup base to help carry the nutrients into the body’s cells. Warming spices to add to a soup base can include ginger, peppers, garlic, cinnamon, allspice, clove, and anise. You can also add just before eating, green onions, basil, thyme, oregano, and sage.
Preventative Care
See your Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner for preventative care, like, now. TCM is always working to help us about 2 months ahead of whatever season it is. Acupuncture, Cupping and Herbal formulas and using food as our first means as preventative medicine are great tools to use to keep the immune system working in good order. Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic system, which is rest and digest. The more relaxed you feel, the better your body can work to fight off colds and flu. As we head into the holiday and cold season give yourself or someone else the time to help restore. You are setting yourself up for wellness success by surrounding yourself with a team of qualified licensed professionals who have been trained to help you and check in with how you are doing. You will thank yourself later.
